Salve! I will be writing about a similar topic that mirrors my previous post. The Greek military and battle strategies. The Greek army’s main battle formation was the phalanx. The phalanx was made up of a group of heavily armored soldiers called hoplites each equipped with a 2 1/2 m spear and a long round shield. The Greek phalanx would look like a giant porcupine coming to attack you as the Greek soldiers charged. Similarly to the Roman Testudo, the Greeks word tightly packed their shields to form a wall. This wall of spears and shields made it impossible for any other army to attack the Greek phalanx head on. it was impossible to attack the phalanx without being impaled by a spear. However, a crucial problem with the Greek phalanx is that it moves very slowly, and cannot break apart easily. “ Macedonian phalanx is difficult, and sometimes impossible to handle, because the men cannot act either in squads or separately.”(Polyibus’s first hand account) This means that it was very susceptible to enemy flex, so the size of the failings were protected by cavalry. In addition, the Greek failing says, had terrible mobility, and could not handle different terrains.
